Emergency Service

Locked Out of Your Home? in Washington DC

Check safety, an authorized spare, and the right access service

If you are locked out of a house, first check whether anyone is in danger and whether an authorized spare is available. For a routine lockout, call with the full DC address, what happened, and the type of lock if known. The suitable access method depends on the hardware and condition.

Our Standards

How We Work

01

Immediate Safety

Call 911 for an urgent threat, fire, or medical emergency; do not wait for a locksmith.

02

Key Situation

Explain whether keys are inside, missing, broken, or no longer turning.

03

Property Authorization

Have the resident, owner, or authorized manager available for the required checks.

04

Entry and Follow-Up

Separate gaining access from any repair, rekeying, or new hardware that may be needed.

First, Check the Situation

A door closing behind you, a missing keyring, and a key that will not turn can lead to the same result but need different work. Tell the provider exactly what happened, including whether the lock had been sticking or the door needed lifting before this incident.

If a trusted person has a working spare, consider whether they can bring it safely. For a rented home, contact the landlord or approved maintenance service about access and permissions.

Call 911 if there is an immediate threat or urgent medical need. If you suspect a break-in, stay outside and follow police instructions. The DC police burglary-prevention guidance advises against entering when a break-in is suspected.

Prepare the Service Call

Give the address and quadrant, the entrance involved, and a callback number. Explain if identification is inside and ask what authorization is needed. If possible, describe the visible lock without sharing a usable key image publicly.

Ask about current availability, the arrival estimate, and all applicable charges. A phone description may not establish the full condition of a damaged lock. Agree how inspection findings and any further work will be approved.

Decide What Happens After Entry

A missing key may justify an authorized rekey or replacement, but the decision depends on the lock and other access routes. A binding door may need a separate repair. Gaining entry does not automatically resolve those issues.

Use the rekeying decision checklist for key-control questions. For a managed unit rather than a house, see apartment lockouts.

Common Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

Can a house lock always be opened without damage?

No universal method or guarantee applies. Ask the provider to explain the proposed approach, possible effects, and alternatives before approving work.

What if my identification is locked inside?

Mention this when booking. Ask what documents or verification the provider requires; do not assume a neighbor’s statement or a piece of mail will always be sufficient.

Do I need new locks after leaving the key inside?

Not necessarily. If the keys remain under your control and the hardware is sound, a lockout alone does not establish a need for replacement. Lost keys or a damaged lock require a separate review.

What should I do while waiting?

Wait somewhere safe and keep the agreed callback number available. Do not climb to windows, force the door, or put improvised tools in the lock.
