Schlage Primus Systems in Washington DC

Patented key control and physical lock security in a residential-profile cylinder

  • Licensed and bonded technicians serving DC homeowners since 2004.
  • Same-day service available on most residential hardware.
  • Every install includes a reinforced 3-inch strike plate.

What We Offer

Dual-Locking Cylinders

Primus cylinders require the key to align standard pins AND operate a secondary independent side-bar mechanism simultaneously, making picking mathematically improbable.

Patented Key Control

Primus keys have a patented side-bitting. Hardware stores do not stock these blanks. Only authorized dealers can cut a copy, and only upon verifying your ID card.

Bump & Drill Resistant

The dual-locking design renders bump keys entirely useless, while hardened steel pins placed at the shear line destroy drill bits.

Residential Integration

Primus cylinders can be retrofitted directly into standard Schlage residential handlesets and deadbolts without looking industrial.

Schlage Primus in Washington DC

Most homeowners who want high-security hardware worry about having to install bulky commercial cylinders on their front doors.

The Schlage Primus system (including Primus XP and CP) solves this. It provides UL 437 rated, ANSI Grade 1 interior mechanics while fitting directly into Schlage residential hardware. DC Local Locksmith installs Primus upgrades across Washington DC, adding serious physical security without changing the door’s appearance.

How the Primus System Stops Intruders

Standard deadbolts operate on a single axis of security: the key lifts a row of standard pins to match a shear line. This simple design is why “lock bumping” (using a vibrating bump key) is so common and devastatingly effective.

Schlage Primus uses two independent locking mechanisms inside a single cylinder:

  1. Top Pinning: Six standard pins that must be lifted to exact heights.
  2. The Finger Pin Sidebar: The side of a Primus key features a patented grooved track. This track must interface with five horizontal finger pins, lifting them and simultaneously rotating them to exact degrees to clear a hardened steel sidebar.

Because a burglar would need to perfectly bounce the top pins while simultaneously rotating the side pins to exact angles, Schlage Primus cylinders are entirely immune to lock bumping and virtually pick-proof.

Furthermore, the lock face is embedded with hardened steel inserts designed to deflect and shatter drill bits during a brute-force attack.

Absolute Key Control

The most significant vulnerability in residential security is key proliferation. If you give a standard key to a dog walker, contractor, or former roommate, they can discreetly copy it for a few dollars at any hardware store kiosk.

The Schlage Primus system eliminates unauthorized duplication:

  • The key blanks are patented and heavily restricted. Big-box hardware stores and automated kiosks do not have them.
  • Only authorized professional locksmiths have the specialized cutting machines required to mill the side-bitting onto the key.
  • When we install your system, you receive a Primus ID Card. We will actively refuse to cut a duplicate key for anyone who cannot produce this card and matching photo ID.
  • You have 100% certainty regarding exactly how many keys to your home currently exist in the world.

Master Keying for Large Properties

For large DC estates or multi-tenant properties, Primus systems support layered Master Key hierarchies. We can map out a system where the property owner has one key that opens everything, while staff or tenants have keys that only open their specific units or restricted zones.

Common Questions

Schlage Primus Systems in Washington DC FAQs

If I already have Schlage locks, do I need to replace the whole thing?

No, and that is the beauty of the system. If you have existing Schlage deadbolts or knobs (like the Camelot or Plymouth series), we can simply remove the standard core and install a high-security Primus cylinder directly into your existing hardware.

How do I get extra keys made in the future?

When we install your Primus system, we issue an ID signature card. To get a duplicate, you must present this card to our locksmiths (or the specific dealer who owns that keyway level). Without the card, the key will not be cut by anyone.

Is Schlage Primus better than Medeco?

Both are incredible, top-tier high-security systems. Primus is often preferred for residential applications because it easily integrates into existing Schlage decorative hardware, whereas Medeco often requires replacing the entire lock body. Both offer equivalent key control and bump-resistance.

Are you licensed and insured for residential work in DC?

Yes. DC Local Locksmith holds a current DC and MD license, is fully bonded, and carries general liability insurance. Documentation is available on request.

Do you offer after-hours service for home lockouts?

Yes. Our dispatch line is staffed 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, including holidays. Quoted before dispatch.

Which lock brands do you install and service?

We install and service Schlage, Yale, Kwikset, Medeco, Mul-T-Lock, and most ANSI-rated residential hardware. We can supply hardware or install what you provide.

Should I rekey or replace my locks after moving into a new home?

Rekeying is the faster option when the hardware is in good condition and serves most change-of-occupancy needs. Replacement is warranted when hardware is worn, damaged, or below ANSI Grade 1 standard. We confirm which path fits your hardware during the quote.

Can you cut additional keys on-site?

Yes. We carry key blanks for most residential cylinders and can cut copies at the time of service.

What is ANSI Grade 1, and do I need it for my exterior doors?

ANSI Grade 1 is the highest residential security rating, tested for 250,000 cycles, 6 attempts at 75-pound force, and pick/drill resistance. We recommend Grade 1 on all exterior doors and Grade 2 minimum on interior doors.

What is your protocol for eviction-related lock changes?

We require a copy of the court order before performing an eviction lock change. We do not perform lock changes on occupied residential units without legal authorization.
