What We Offer

Custom Key Hierarchy

We design a key hierarchy tailored to your household, master keys for owners, limited keys for staff, and individual keys for specific rooms.

All Doors Included

Front door, back door, side entry, garage, shed, gate, mailbox, every lock in the system works with one master key.

Compatible Locks

We ensure all locks in the system are compatible with master keying. If any locks are incompatible, we replace them to complete the system.

Expandable

Adding a new lock? We pin it to work with your existing master key system so one key continues to open everything.

Residential Master Key Systems in Washington DC

If you carry more than three keys, a master key system will simplify your life. Instead of a full keyring, front door, back door, garage, shed, gate, mailbox, you carry one key that opens everything.

How Master Keying Works

Standard locks use a single set of pin tumblers that only one key pattern can operate. Master keying adds a second set of “master pins” to each lock, creating two key patterns that work: the individual key and the master key.

Key Hierarchy Options

LevelWho Gets ItWhat It Opens
Grand MasterProperty ownerEvery lock in the system
MasterPrimary residentAll exterior + common area locks
Sub-MasterHousekeeper/staffSpecific doors (e.g., front + utility)
IndividualGuest/childOne specific lock only

Common Residential Master Key Configurations

  • Homeowner + housekeeperOwner has master key for all doors. Housekeeper has a key for the front door and utility areas only.
  • Landlord + tenantsLandlord has master for all units. Each tenant has a key only for their apartment.
  • Multi-generation householdParents have master key. Adult children have keys for the main house. Grandparents have a key for their in-law suite.
  • Home officeMaster key opens the front door and office. Individual key only opens the office, preventing other household members from accessing work materials.

Our Installation Process

  1. Assess your locksWe check every lock that should be part of the system. Incompatible locks are identified.
  2. Design the hierarchyWe create a key chart showing who gets what access level.
  3. Replace incompatible locksAny locks that can’t be master-keyed (some smart locks, some high-security systems) are replaced.
  4. Pin the systemEach lock is rebuilt with master pins and individual pins according to the hierarchy.
  5. Cut all keysMaster keys, sub-master keys, and individual keys are cut and labeled.
  6. Document the systemWe provide a key chart showing every lock, every key, and every access relationship, and keep a secure copy for future service.

Common Questions

Residential Master Key Systems in Washington DC FAQs

How does a master key system work?

Each lock is pinned with two sets of pins, one for its individual key and one for the master key. This means the master key opens all locks, while each individual key only opens its designated lock.

Is a master key system less secure?

A properly designed system is secure. However, master-keyed locks do have slightly more pin combinations than standard locks, which theoretically makes them marginally easier to pick. For residential use, this difference is negligible, especially with quality locks.

Can I add a new lock to the system later?

Yes. We maintain records of your master key system's pinning. When you add a new lock, a new door, a storage shed, a gate, we pin it to work with your existing master key.

What if I lose my master key?

Losing a master key is a security concern because it opens every lock. We can rekey the entire system to a new master key, deactivating the lost one. This is why we recommend keeping your master key secure and only carrying individual keys day-to-day.

Is this good for landlords with multiple units?

Yes. Landlords can have a master key for all units while each tenant has a key that only opens their own unit. When a tenant moves out, we rekey their unit without affecting the master system.

Are you licensed and insured for residential work in DC?

Yes. DC Local Locksmith holds a current DC and MD license, is fully bonded, and carries general liability insurance. Documentation is available on request.

Do you offer after-hours service for home lockouts?

Yes. Our dispatch line is staffed 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, including holidays. Quoted before dispatch.

Which lock brands do you install and service?

We install and service Schlage, Yale, Kwikset, Medeco, Mul-T-Lock, and most ANSI-rated residential hardware. We can supply hardware or install what you provide.

Should I rekey or replace my locks after moving into a new home?

Rekeying is the faster option when the hardware is in good condition and serves most change-of-occupancy needs. Replacement is warranted when hardware is worn, damaged, or below ANSI Grade 1 standard. We confirm which path fits your hardware during the quote.

Can you cut additional keys on-site?

Yes. We carry key blanks for most residential cylinders and can cut copies at the time of service.

Quote Process

Send a Photo. Get the Exact Quote.

Before any technician is dispatched, a manager reviews the photos you send and confirms a single total. That confirmed total is the number on the invoice. Send a photo of the lock, door, or vehicle and a manager will reply with the exact amount before anyone is scheduled. The quote is the total.
