High Security Locks in Washington DC

Commercial-grade protection for your residential doors. Bump-proof, pick-proof, and drill-resistant.

  • Licensed and bonded technicians serving DC homeowners since 2004.
  • Same-day service available on most residential hardware.
  • Every install includes a reinforced 3-inch strike plate.

What We Offer

Bump & Pick Proof cylinders

Installation of complex, multi-axis pin tumblers that mathematically eliminate the threat of lock bumping and covert picking techniques.

Drill-Resistant Housings

High-security lock bodies feature hardened steel inserts and anti-drill ball bearings that destroy drill bits on contact.

Patented Key Control

Eliminate unauthorized key copying. Your keys can only be duplicated by an authorized dealer upon presentation of your restricted security card.

ANSI Grade 1 Hardware

We install the heaviest, thickest deadbolts on the market, tested to withstand hundreds of pounds of blunt force and kick-in attacks.

Real Security for Washington DC Homes

Most homeowners do not realize that standard builder-grade deadbolts can be bypassed in seconds. Lock bumping, using a specially cut bump key to trick the pins into opening, leaves zero signs of forced entry. Insurance companies sometimes deny claims as a result.

DC Local Locksmith upgrades residential doors with commercial-grade hardware that resists brute force, drilling, picking, and unauthorized key duplication.

The Threats Standard Locks Cannot Stop

  1. Lock Bumping: 90% of standard residential locks can be bumped open by anyone with internet access and a bump key.
  2. Drilling: A standard brass cylinder can be drilled through the shear line with a basic power drill in under a minute.
  3. Kick-Ins: Thin lock bolts and standard strike plates tear through wooden door frames easily during a kick-in attack.
  4. Unauthorized Copying: When you give a house key to a dog walker, contractor, or housekeeper, they can duplicate it anonymously at any hardware store kiosk in minutes.

How High-Security Locks Solve These Problems

When we install brands like Medeco, Mul-T-Lock, or Schlage Primus, you are fundamentally changing the defensive posture of your home:

Dual-Locking Mechanisms Standard locks use a single row of pins. High-security locks use angled pins, telescoping pins, and secondary sidebars. A lock picker or bumper cannot simultaneously manipulate every axis of security, making the lock virtually pick-proof and bump-proof.

Hardened Steel Construction These locks are heavy. They feature solid brass bodies packed with hardened steel inserts right in front of the cylinder. If a burglar attempts to use a power drill, the hardened steel will catch the drill bit and snap it instantly.

Strict Key Control When we install a high-security system, you receive a patented key and a Registration Card. No one can copy your key without that card. You could hand your key to a contractor for a week; if they take it to a hardware store or another locksmith, the machine will not have the blank keyway profile to cut it. It is physically and legally restricted. You always know exactly how many keys exist to your home.

Complete Door Reinforcement

A high-security lock is only as strong as the door holding it. When we install heavy-duty deadbolts, we also reinforce your door framing. We install extended, heavy-duty strike plates using 3-inch architectural screws that anchor the lock directly into the wall studs, preventing kick-in attacks.

Common Questions

High Security Locks in Washington DC FAQs

What makes a lock 'high security'?

A true high-security lock holds an ANSI Grade 1 rating and features three main elements: highly restricted key duplication (you must show an ID card to get a copy), internal secondary locking mechanisms (like a sidebar) that prevent picking/bumping, and hardened steel anti-drill pins protecting the cylinder.

Can I just upgrade the core of my current lock?

Often, yes. If you currently have heavy-duty commercial or high-end residential hardware, we can simply replace the existing cylinder (the part the key goes into) with a high-security Medeco or Mul-T-Lock core, saving you the cost of entirely new lock bodies.

I lost my high-security key and my authorization card. What do I do?

Because we prioritize your security, we cannot duplicate a restricted key without the card. We will need to come to your home, verify your identity and ownership of the property, drill out the existing high-security cylinder, and install a brand new cylinder with a new key control card.

Are you licensed and insured for residential work in DC?

Yes. DC Local Locksmith holds a current DC and MD license, is fully bonded, and carries general liability insurance. Documentation is available on request.

Do you offer after-hours service for home lockouts?

Yes. Our dispatch line is staffed 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, including holidays. Quoted before dispatch.

Which lock brands do you install and service?

We install and service Schlage, Yale, Kwikset, Medeco, Mul-T-Lock, and most ANSI-rated residential hardware. We can supply hardware or install what you provide.

Should I rekey or replace my locks after moving into a new home?

Rekeying is the faster option when the hardware is in good condition and serves most change-of-occupancy needs. Replacement is warranted when hardware is worn, damaged, or below ANSI Grade 1 standard. We confirm which path fits your hardware during the quote.

Can you cut additional keys on-site?

Yes. We carry key blanks for most residential cylinders and can cut copies at the time of service.

What is ANSI Grade 1, and do I need it for my exterior doors?

ANSI Grade 1 is the highest residential security rating, tested for 250,000 cycles, 6 attempts at 75-pound force, and pick/drill resistance. We recommend Grade 1 on all exterior doors and Grade 2 minimum on interior doors.

What is your protocol for eviction-related lock changes?

We require a copy of the court order before performing an eviction lock change. We do not perform lock changes on occupied residential units without legal authorization.
