Start with safety and a usable location
If a child is locked in a vehicle or anyone is in immediate danger, call 911 first. For an ordinary missing-key problem, move to a safe place and note the vehicle’s location. A DC garage inquiry should include the garage name, level, space, and any access restrictions.

Explain that no working key remains

Confirm support before booking
Ask whether the provider supports an all-keys-lost procedure for the exact vehicle. Confirm compatible parts, any manufacturer or security-access requirements, whether parts must be ordered, and whether the vehicle needs to be present at a particular facility.
A provider that can add a spare on one model may not support all-keys-lost work on another. Procedures and credential types vary. Review both replacement and lost-key access
Ask which functions the replacement will provide and how they will be checked. A blade cut to open a door is different from an authorized electronic starting credential.
Also ask whether the missing electronic key can be removed from the vehicle’s authorized list. Its mechanical blade may remain capable of opening a lock unless the relevant hardware changes. Replacing a fob does not automatically resolve every form of old-key access.
Agree on the scope and the next step
Confirm the service or trip charge, parts, cutting, programming, assessment, and any after-hours charges. Ask how changes or unsupported conditions will be handled before authorizing the visit. Do not rely on a promise covering every make and model.
