Yale Assure Installation in Washington DC
Most smart locks are bulky and industrial. The Yale Assure Lock 2 is 30% smaller than traditional electronic deadbolts. It delivers access control in a profile that fits a residential door without looking out of place.
DC Local Locksmith installs, calibrates, and configures the entire Yale residential ecosystem across Washington DC.
The Yale Assure Ecosystem
The Yale Assure line is modular. The base hardware is the same across models, but the “Smart Module” in the back determines how it connects:
1. Bluetooth & Keypad (Base Model) Perfect if you only want to use numeric PIN codes and unlock via your phone when standing directly in front of the door.
2. Wi-Fi Connected The most popular choice for DC homeowners. It connects directly to your home router, allowing you to lock the door from your office, check the door’s status from vacation, and generate temporary codes for dog walkers.
3. Apple Home Key (Assure Lock 2 Plus) For Apple households: the HomeKit-native version lets you tap your iPhone or Apple Watch to the lock to open it. No need to wake your phone or open an app.
4. Z-Wave Integration For advanced home automation enthusiasts running SmartThings, Hubitat, or Ring Alarm systems. We install the Z-Wave module to tie your front door into complex routines (e.g., locking the door automatically arms the residential alarm and turns off the lights).
Why Yale Assure Requires Professional Installation
Yale engineers these locks to be compact, which means the internal motor is calibrated to throw a deadbolt with minimal resistance. A traditional deadbolt can be forced through a misaligned frame by twisting the key harder. A Yale Assure motor cannot be forced. If the bolt rubs against the strike plate, the lock jams, and the motor burns through AA batteries in weeks.
Our installation:
- We assess and correct hinge sag.
- We deepen and realign the strike box in the door frame.
- We install the reinforced strike plate Yale provides.
- We run the lock’s internal calibration sequence.
- We pair the lock to your home network.

Hardware Comparison
Choosing the Right Deadbolt
| Feature | Single Cylinder | Double Cylinder |
|---|---|---|
| Key requirement | Key outside, thumb-turn inside | Key required from both sides |
| DC fire code | Required on most primary exits | Permitted on glass-panel doors only |
| Best for | Standard exterior doors, front and back | Doors adjacent to glass panels or sidelights |
| Emergency egress | No key needed from inside | Key must be kept accessible near door |
DC Local Locksmith recommends single-cylinder on all primary exits per DC fire code.

Yale Assure Installation in Washington DC FAQs
What happens if a key-free Yale Assure lock runs out of battery?
The lock warns you weeks in advance via the app and blinking red lights. If the batteries do fail, there are two metal terminals on the bottom of the exterior keypad. Hold a standard 9-volt battery against these terminals to temporarily power the lock and enter your PIN.
Can I use a Yale Assure lock if I live in a condo?
Yes, provided your HOA permits exterior keypad units. If your condo has strict aesthetic rules, we often recommend the Yale Approach or August Wi-Fi lock, which only replaces the interior thumbturn of your deadbolt, leaving the exterior hallway unchanged.
Does the Yale Assure work with my existing keys?
Some models come with a traditional physical keyway. If you choose a keyed model, our locksmiths can often rekey the new Yale cylinder to match your existing Schlage or Kwikset house keys, provided the keyway profile matches.
Are you licensed and insured for residential work in DC?
Yes. DC Local Locksmith holds a current DC and MD license, is fully bonded, and carries general liability insurance. Documentation is available on request.
Do you offer after-hours service for home lockouts?
Yes. Our dispatch line is staffed 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, including holidays. Quoted before dispatch.
Which lock brands do you install and service?
We install and service Schlage, Yale, Kwikset, Medeco, Mul-T-Lock, and most ANSI-rated residential hardware. We can supply hardware or install what you provide.
Should I rekey or replace my locks after moving into a new home?
Rekeying is the faster option when the hardware is in good condition and serves most change-of-occupancy needs. Replacement is warranted when hardware is worn, damaged, or below ANSI Grade 1 standard. We confirm which path fits your hardware during the quote.
Can you cut additional keys on-site?
Yes. We carry key blanks for most residential cylinders and can cut copies at the time of service.
What is ANSI Grade 1, and do I need it for my exterior doors?
ANSI Grade 1 is the highest residential security rating, tested for 250,000 cycles, 6 attempts at 75-pound force, and pick/drill resistance. We recommend Grade 1 on all exterior doors and Grade 2 minimum on interior doors.
What is your protocol for eviction-related lock changes?
We require a copy of the court order before performing an eviction lock change. We do not perform lock changes on occupied residential units without legal authorization.
