August Smart Lock in Washington DC

Adding a smart lock to a DC apartment or condo often runs into HOA rules prohibiting exterior hardware changes. The August Smart Lock solves this: it mounts on the inside of your existing deadbolt, so the exterior stays unchanged while you gain app control and auto-locking.

DC Local Locksmith installs August hardware and calibrates the door alignment so the auto-locking mechanism works reliably.

Key Benefits of the August Smart Lock

  • Keep Your Keys: Don’t throw away that keychain just yet. Your existing exterior deadbolt remains exactly the same.
  • Auto-Unlock Capabilities: Using geo-fencing and Bluetooth, the August lock can detect your smartphone approaching and automatically unlock the door right as you reach the handle. Never fumble for keys with groceries again.
  • DoorSense™ Technology: The system includes a sensor that tells you not just if the lock is engaged, but whether the door itself is actually closed. You’ll know immediately if the door was left ajar.
  • Complete Activity Tracking: Get a 24/7 feed on your mobile device detailing exactly who locked or unlocked the door and when.
  • Virtual Access Management: Stop hiding keys under the mat. Issue virtual guest keys that only work during specific hours (perfect for dog walkers or housekeepers) and revoke them instantly via the app.

Why Professional Installation is Crucial for Smart Locks

It’s common to view smart locks as quick weekend projects. However, smart locks expose underlying issues with your door’s alignment that you might not have noticed while turning a key by hand.

When turning a traditional thumb-turn, human hands can easily push through minor friction or door sag. A smart lock motor, however, is calibrated to stop if it encounters resistance. If your deadbolt rubs against the strike plate, your new August lock will constantly report “jammed” errors, refuse to lock, and run out of battery in a matter of weeks.

When DC Local Locksmith installs your August hardware, we do more than just attach the device:

  • We inspect door sag, frame warpage, and weatherstripping compression.
  • We realign and file the strike plate to achieve zero-friction throw.
  • We properly calibrate the August motor and DoorSense module.
  • We walk you through app setup, WiFi bridging, and testing the auto-unlock features.

Common Questions

August Smart Lock Installation in Washington DC FAQs

Can I still use my physical key with an August Lock?

Yes. Because the August Smart Lock only replaces the interior thumb-turn of your deadbolt, the exterior cylinder remains unchanged. You can still use your physical key if your phone dies or if you prefer traditional entry.

Why do I need a locksmith to install a smart lock?

While often marketed as DIY, smart lock motors are highly sensitive to friction. If your door sags slightly, or weatherstripping pushes against the frame, the deadbolt can bind. This causes the smart lock motor to jam, fail prematurely, or drain batteries rapidly. A professional locksmith ensures your door and strike plate are precisely aligned for zero-friction locking.

Is the August lock compatible with my current deadbolt?

August Smart Locks are compatible with most standard single-cylinder deadbolts (where there is a thumb-turn on the inside). They are not compatible with mortise, rim cylinder, or integrated handle locks. We can assist in verifying your hardware prior to installation.

Are you licensed and insured for residential work in DC?

Yes. DC Local Locksmith holds a current DC and MD license, is fully bonded, and carries general liability insurance. Documentation is available on request.

Do you offer after-hours service for home lockouts?

Yes. Our dispatch line is staffed 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, including holidays. Quoted before dispatch.

Which lock brands do you install and service?

We install and service Schlage, Yale, Kwikset, Medeco, Mul-T-Lock, and most ANSI-rated residential hardware. We can supply hardware or install what you provide.

Should I rekey or replace my locks after moving into a new home?

Rekeying is the faster option when the hardware is in good condition and serves most change-of-occupancy needs. Replacement is warranted when hardware is worn, damaged, or below ANSI Grade 1 standard. We confirm which path fits your hardware during the quote.

Can you cut additional keys on-site?

Yes. We carry key blanks for most residential cylinders and can cut copies at the time of service.

What is ANSI Grade 1, and do I need it for my exterior doors?

ANSI Grade 1 is the highest residential security rating, tested for 250,000 cycles, 6 attempts at 75-pound force, and pick/drill resistance. We recommend Grade 1 on all exterior doors and Grade 2 minimum on interior doors.

What is your protocol for eviction-related lock changes?

We require a copy of the court order before performing an eviction lock change. We do not perform lock changes on occupied residential units without legal authorization.
