What We Offer

Diagnose Before Fixing

We identify the root cause, worn pins, misaligned strike plate, bent tailpiece, corroded cylinder, before recommending any repair.

Repair When Possible

Not every lock problem requires replacement. Many issues can be fixed by cleaning, lubricating, realigning, or replacing internal components.

Replace When Necessary

If the lock is beyond repair, cracked housing, stripped threads, broken cam, we'll recommend replacement and can install new hardware on the spot.

All Lock Types

Deadbolts, knob locks, mortise locks, lever handles, smart locks, high-security cylinders, we repair them all.

Lock Repair in Washington DC

Locks wear out. Pins corrode from DC’s humidity. Springs weaken from thousands of turns. Strike plates loosen as door frames settle. The question is whether to catch the problem early with a repair or wait until the lock fails at the worst possible moment.

Signs Your Lock Needs Repair

  • Key requires jigglingYou have to wiggle, lift, or push the key to get it to turn. This indicates worn pins or a dirty cylinder.
  • Deadbolt doesn’t extend fullyThe bolt barely enters the strike plate, providing minimal security.
  • Lock is loose on the doorThe lock body wobbles when you turn the key or handle.
  • Key only works from one sideThe inside thumb-turn works but the outside key doesn’t (or vice versa).
  • Difficulty inserting the keyThe key goes in partway but resistance prevents full insertion.
  • Lock freezes in cold weatherMoisture in the cylinder freezes during DC winter, preventing operation.

Common Lock Repairs

  1. Cylinder cleaning and lubricationRemoves dust, corrosion, and debris that cause sticking. We use graphite-based lubricant (never WD-40, which attracts more dirt).
  2. Pin replacementWorn or corroded pins are replaced with new ones, restoring smooth key operation.
  3. Strike plate realignmentWhen a door settles, the bolt no longer lines up with the strike. We enlarge or reposition the strike pocket.
  4. Tailpiece adjustmentThe connecting rod between the cylinder and bolt mechanism is realigned or replaced.
  5. Spring replacementWorn return springs in mortise locks and knob locks are replaced to restore proper latching.

DC-Specific Lock Issues

  • Humidity corrosionDC’s humid summers accelerate pin and spring corrosion inside cylinders
  • Row house settlingOlder DC row houses shift over time, misaligning door frames and strike plates
  • Original mortise hardwareGeorgetown and Capitol Hill homes often have 100+ year old mortise locks that can be rebuilt rather than replaced
  • Paint-sealed locksLayers of paint can seal the cylinder or prevent the latch from retracting fully

Common Questions

Lock Repair in Washington DC FAQs

My key sticks when I turn it. Can you fix that?

Yes. A sticky key is usually caused by worn pins, a dirty cylinder, or a misaligned lock body. We can clean and lubricate the cylinder, replace worn pins, or realign the lock, depending on the root cause.

My deadbolt won't extend fully. What's wrong?

This is typically caused by a misaligned strike plate or a door that has shifted due to settling. We realign the strike plate, adjust the bolt throw, and ensure the deadbolt extends fully into the frame.

Should I repair or replace my lock?

If the lock body is intact and the issue is mechanical (worn pins, dirty cylinder, misalignment), repair is usually the better option. If the housing is cracked, the mechanism is stripped, or the lock is an outdated security grade, replacement makes more sense.

Can you repair an old mortise lock?

Yes. Mortise locks in older DC homes are often repairable. We can replace springs, rebuild the internals, and rekey the cylinder, preserving the original hardware.

Why does my lock work from one side but not the other?

This is usually a tailpiece alignment issue. The tailpiece connects the external key cylinder to the internal thumb-turn mechanism. If it's bent, loose, or misaligned, the lock won't operate from one side. We can fix this on-site.

Are you licensed and insured for residential work in DC?

Yes. DC Local Locksmith holds a current DC and MD license, is fully bonded, and carries general liability insurance. Documentation is available on request.

Do you offer after-hours service for home lockouts?

Yes. Our dispatch line is staffed 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, including holidays. Quoted before dispatch.

Which lock brands do you install and service?

We install and service Schlage, Yale, Kwikset, Medeco, Mul-T-Lock, and most ANSI-rated residential hardware. We can supply hardware or install what you provide.

Should I rekey or replace my locks after moving into a new home?

Rekeying is the faster option when the hardware is in good condition and serves most change-of-occupancy needs. Replacement is warranted when hardware is worn, damaged, or below ANSI Grade 1 standard. We confirm which path fits your hardware during the quote.

Can you cut additional keys on-site?

Yes. We carry key blanks for most residential cylinders and can cut copies at the time of service.
