What We Offer
100% Key-Free Design
No physical keyhole means the lock cannot be picked or bumped by intruders, significantly increasing resistance to covert entry.
Deep Google Integration
Lock the door using Google Assistant, check the status on your Nest Hub, and manage access directly through the consolidated Google Home app.
Auto-Lock Routines
Configure the lock to secure itself automatically when the 'Home/Away Assist' feature detects that your phone has left the geofenced area around your house.
Privacy Mode
Engage a digital deadbolt feature that temporarily disables the exterior keypad, ensuring no one with a valid code can enter while you sleep.
The Ultimate Google Home Upgrade: Nest x Yale in DC
If your Washington DC home runs on Google, with Nest thermostats on the wall, Google Home speakers in the kitchen, and Nest Hubs on the nightstand, adding a random, third-party smart lock can feel disjointed. The Nest x Yale Lock was co-engineered specifically to live inside this ecosystem.
By stripping away the physical keyhole entirely, this lock commits 100% to the digital experience. DC Local Locksmith provides the professional mechanical installation and network bridging required to make this lock a reliable, fluid part of your daily routine.
The Security of Key-Free Living
The most striking visual element of the Nest x Yale lock is the sleek, dark glass touchscreen and the absolute absence of a key cylinder. The keyless design is a security upgrade.
- Pick-Proof & Bump-Proof: The vast majority of standard residential burglaries involve manipulating the physical pins inside a cylinder using a pick tool or a bump key. Because the Nest x Yale relies exclusively on motorized retraction governed by a digital PIN, these physical attacks are impossible.
- Tamper Alarms: If someone attempts to forcibly remove the exterior keypad or repeatedly guesses incorrect PIN codes, the lock sounds a localized alarm and immediately sends a push notification to your phone.
- No Lost Keys: You will never again have to hide a physical key under a doormat or worry about a dog walker losing your house key.
Smart Automation
The Nest x Yale goes beyond entering a PIN. The real value is in its automation through the Google Home app.
- Hands-Free Locking: Are you rushing out the door with arms full of groceries? Simply say, “Hey Google, lock the front door.”
- Home/Away Assist: Using your phone’s location data, the Google ecosystem knows when you’ve left the neighborhood. If you forgot to lock the door, the system can automatically throw the deadbolt behind you.
- Unified Interface: You don’t need a separate app just for your door. You can manage user PINs, review the entry history log, and adjust your thermostat all from the same Google Home dashboard.
Why Professional Installation is Crucial
A key-free lock demands absolute mechanical perfection. If the lock jams due to a poorly aligned door, there is no physical key you can force turn to get inside.
When DC Local Locksmith installs the Nest x Yale, we address the mechanical environment before touching the electronics.
- We adjust door hinges and weatherstripping to eliminate sagging.
- We reinforce the strike box to handle the dimensions of the heavy-duty tapered deadbolt.
- We place the Nest Connect bridge where it maintains a strong connection to your Wi-Fi router.

Hardware Comparison
Choosing the Right Deadbolt
| Feature | Single Cylinder | Double Cylinder |
|---|---|---|
| Key requirement | Key outside, thumb-turn inside | Key required from both sides |
| DC fire code | Required on most primary exits | Permitted on glass-panel doors only |
| Best for | Standard exterior doors, front and back | Doors adjacent to glass panels or sidelights |
| Emergency egress | No key needed from inside | Key must be kept accessible near door |
DC Local Locksmith recommends single-cylinder on all primary exits per DC fire code.

Nest x Yale Smart Lock in Washington DC FAQs
If there's no keyhole, what happens if the batteries die while I'm outside?
The lock provides multiple low-battery warnings via the app and a red light on the keypad. If the batteries do die fully, there are two metal terminals at the bottom of the exterior keypad. Hold a standard 9-volt battery against these terminals to temporarily power the lock so you can enter your PIN and get inside to change the internal AA batteries.
Does the lock connect directly to my Wi-Fi?
No, to conserve battery life, the lock uses 'Thread' to communicate with a dedicated bridge device called the Nest Connect (which comes included with the lock in most retail packages). The Nest Connect plugs into a standard wall outlet within 15-20 feet of the door and acts as the bridge to your Wi-Fi network.
Can a locksmith fix a jammed Nest x Yale lock?
Yes. Almost all smart lock jams come from mechanical friction between the bolt and the strike plate, not software failure. Our technicians re-align the door, deepen the strike pocket, and reset the motor so the bolt glides cleanly without draining the battery.
Are you licensed and insured for residential work in DC?
Yes. DC Local Locksmith holds a current DC and MD license, is fully bonded, and carries general liability insurance. Documentation is available on request.
Do you offer after-hours service for home lockouts?
Yes. Our dispatch line is staffed 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, including holidays. Quoted before dispatch.
Which lock brands do you install and service?
We install and service Schlage, Yale, Kwikset, Medeco, Mul-T-Lock, and most ANSI-rated residential hardware. We can supply hardware or install what you provide.
Should I rekey or replace my locks after moving into a new home?
Rekeying is the faster option when the hardware is in good condition and serves most change-of-occupancy needs. Replacement is warranted when hardware is worn, damaged, or below ANSI Grade 1 standard. We confirm which path fits your hardware during the quote.
Can you cut additional keys on-site?
Yes. We carry key blanks for most residential cylinders and can cut copies at the time of service.
What is ANSI Grade 1, and do I need it for my exterior doors?
ANSI Grade 1 is the highest residential security rating, tested for 250,000 cycles, 6 attempts at 75-pound force, and pick/drill resistance. We recommend Grade 1 on all exterior doors and Grade 2 minimum on interior doors.
What is your protocol for eviction-related lock changes?
We require a copy of the court order before performing an eviction lock change. We do not perform lock changes on occupied residential units without legal authorization.
