What We Offer

Invisible Security

We install hidden magnetic and plunger locks that secure cabinet doors without visually altering the exterior of your furniture.

Cam & Plunger Locks

Expert drilling and installation of standard brass cam locks to protect home office file drawers and private desk compartments.

Child Safety Focus

Restricting access to cleaning chemicals, liquor cabinets, and prescription medications using solid mechanical locks, far superior to plastic baby latches.

Keyed-Alike Systems

We can configure multiple drawers or a whole bank of cabinets to operate on a single, unified key rather than dealing with a cluster of different tiny keys.

Interior Security for Your DC Home

Most homeowners focus exclusively on exterior deadbolts. However, true residential security involves compartmentalization. When a cleaning crew, a dog walker, or a plumber is inside your home, they have free reign over the space.

DC Local Locksmith specializes in localized interior security. We install discrete, high-quality locking mechanisms on interior furniture to keep private documents, sensitive medications, and dangerous items out of reach of guests, contractors, and children in the home.

Upgrading Your Home Office

Since the shift to remote work, many DC residents are storing highly sensitive corporate hardware, legal documents, and financial data in their home offices.

  • Desk Drawers: We install plunger locks that can secure an entire vertical stack of desk drawers with a single push mechanism.
  • Filing Cabinets: If you purchased a used Hon or Steelcase filing cabinet without a key, we can originate new keys or replace the entire locking core to ensure previous owners no longer have access.
  • Tech Storage: We can outfit server racks and media cabinets with ventilated digital locks to protect expensive network hardware and servers.

Childproofing & Hazard Security

Childproofing usually involves flimsy plastic latches meant to stop toddlers. But preventing teenagers from accessing restricted items requires actual mechanical security.

  • Liquor & Wine Cabinets: We install brass cam locks on glass-paneled display cabinets and solid wood credenzas to prevent unauthorized access to alcohol.
  • Medicine Storage: Bathroom vanities can be retrofitted with lock-and-key mechanisms to restrict access to prescription medications.
  • Firearms & Ammunition: While gun safes are ideal, we can severely harden closets and heavy wooden cabinets with deadbolts and keypad locks for secondary secure storage of sporting equipment.

Preserving Antique Furniture

The Washington DC area is filled with stunning mid-century and antique furniture. When dealing with an antique roll-top desk or a 100-year-old mahogany armoire, the installation must be surgical to avoid splitting the aged wood or ruining the patina.

Our technicians use low-torque drills and precision templates to drill the exact required dimensions without splitting aged wood. We can source antique-brass and oil-rubbed bronze lock faces so the hardware matches the furniture’s historical aesthetic.

Keep your private life private. Contact DC Local Locksmith today to upgrade the security on your cabinets, drawers, and interior furniture.

Common Questions

Residential Cabinet & Drawer Locks in Washington DC FAQs

Can you put a lock on a wooden cabinet door that has never had a lock before?

Yes. We routinely upgrade standard wooden kitchen and bathroom cabinets. We drill the appropriate bore hole through the wood to mount the cylinder, then align a protective strike plate on the interior frame so the bolt has a secure anchor point.

I lost the key to my locked file cabinet. Do I have to break it open?

No. Never pry it open; that bends the track and destroys the cabinet. Our technicians can pick or decode the pins inside standard file cabinet locks. Once open, we read the lock code stamped on the cylinder to cut a replacement key, or replace the lock body outright.

Do you have locks that don't require me to carry a key?

Yes. For liquor cabinets and gun storage, we highly recommend electronic keypad cam locks. These replace the standard key-turn with a 4-digit PIN pad. They are battery-operated and provide excellent security without the risk of an aggressive teenager finding where you hid the key.

Are you licensed and insured for residential work in DC?

Yes. DC Local Locksmith holds a current DC and MD license, is fully bonded, and carries general liability insurance. Documentation is available on request.

Do you offer after-hours service for home lockouts?

Yes. Our dispatch line is staffed 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, including holidays. Quoted before dispatch.

Which lock brands do you install and service?

We install and service Schlage, Yale, Kwikset, Medeco, Mul-T-Lock, and most ANSI-rated residential hardware. We can supply hardware or install what you provide.

Should I rekey or replace my locks after moving into a new home?

Rekeying is the faster option when the hardware is in good condition and serves most change-of-occupancy needs. Replacement is warranted when hardware is worn, damaged, or below ANSI Grade 1 standard. We confirm which path fits your hardware during the quote.

Can you cut additional keys on-site?

Yes. We carry key blanks for most residential cylinders and can cut copies at the time of service.

What is ANSI Grade 1, and do I need it for my exterior doors?

ANSI Grade 1 is the highest residential security rating, tested for 250,000 cycles, 6 attempts at 75-pound force, and pick/drill resistance. We recommend Grade 1 on all exterior doors and Grade 2 minimum on interior doors.

What is your protocol for eviction-related lock changes?

We require a copy of the court order before performing an eviction lock change. We do not perform lock changes on occupied residential units without legal authorization.
