  • On-site key cutting and transponder programming in one visit.

What We Offer

All-Keys-Lost Fob Generation

If you have lost your only proximity fob, we access your vehicle's immobilizer ECU to clear the lost keys and program a new fob system.

Mobile Dealership Alternatives

We utilize Autel and Smart Pro diagnostic software to program advanced encrypted fobs without the massive dealership markup or the need to tow your car.

OEM & Premium Aftermarket

Choose from authentic Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) fobs or rigorously tested, high-quality aftermarket alternatives to fit your budget.

Emergency Blade Cutting

Every proximity fob contains a hidden mechanical emergency key. We CNC-mill this blade during the fob programming so you are never fully locked out if the car battery dies.

Mobile Proximity Fob Programming

Walking up to your car in a DC winter and driving away without touching a key became standard equipment on most Hondas, Toyotas, and Fords by the mid-2010s. These fobs communicate continuously with antennas throughout the vehicle body. Lose one, and the car won’t start.

DC Local Locksmith provides mobile programming with dealership-level software, at your location across the District.

How Proximity Programming Works

A standard car key requires cutting a metal blade to match a cylinder. A proximity fob is a purely digital transaction.

  1. Diagnostic Connection: Our technicians connect a powerful tablet computer directly to your vehicle’s OBD-II port (usually located under the steering wheel).
  2. Immobilizer Bypass: We establish communication with the vehicle’s heavily encrypted Anti-Theft or BCM (Body Control Module). Depending on the make and year, this requires rolling PIN codes or specialized automaker calculations.
  3. Fob Registration: We command the vehicle’s computer to accept a new signal, whilst we activate the fresh fob in the cabin. The car registers the fob’s unique cryptographic signature.
  4. Blade Milling: We cut the emergency mechanical slide-out blade to ensure you can manually open the driver’s door if the car battery dies.

Serving All Makes and Models

Dealerships only service their specific brand. DC Local Locksmith is equipped and trained to handle the complex, unique immobilizer systems of diverse manufacturers:

  • Asian Imports (Toyota, Honda, Nissan, Hyundai): We stock a deep inventory for these highly common DC commuter vehicles. Whether it is a Nissan Intelligent Key or a Toyota Smart Key, we wipe and reprogram them on-site in a single dispatch.
  • Domestic Vehicles (Ford, Chevrolet, Chrysler): From a Ford F-150 PEPS key to a Chevy Equinox Smart Key, we bypass standard domestic anti-theft systems smoothly.
  • European Luxury (BMW, VW, Audi): Programming a BMW Comfort Access fob or a VW proximity key requires vastly more complex equipment to read the CAS/FEM modules. We carry the advanced programmers capable of handling strict European encryption safely.

The DC Urban Environment Challenge

Operating advanced RF (Radio Frequency) fobs in Washington DC presents unique challenges. The city is dense with political, military, and federal broadcast infrastructure. It is very common for drivers parking near the Capitol, Navy Yard, or certain Embassy rows to experience “Fob Dead Zones.” Massive cellular and radio interference can temporarily drown out your fob’s signal, preventing the car from starting. Always remember your emergency start procedure (usually touching the fob directly to the button).

However, if your fob is genuinely lost, water-logged from a storm, or crushed, our mobile units will locate you in the city, bypass the electronics, and hand you a fully functioning proximity fob.

Avoid exorbitant dealership towing fees and multi-day waiting periods. Call DC Local Locksmith at (202) 830-0706 for rapid, on-site proximity fob programming in Washington DC.

Common Questions

Proximity Key Fobs in Washington DC FAQs

My car uses a push-to-start button. Do I really need a locksmith if the battery in the fob dies?

No. If ONLY the battery is dead, you can usually still start the car in an emergency. Look in your owner's manual, most cars allow you to hold the dead fob physically against the start button (or place it in a special slot in the center console) to start the engine via near-field communication. However, if the fob is physically crushed or water damaged, we will need to replace and program a new one.

Can you program a proximity fob that I bought cheaply online?

We highly discourage buying random fobs online. Proximity fobs have specific FCC IDs and circuit board variations. Often, cheap internet fobs have locked chips from previous vehicles, or incorrect frequencies, meaning they permanently fail to program. If we provide the fob, we guarantee compatibility and functionality.

If I lost my fob, can the person who found it steal my car?

Yes, unless you have the system wiped. When you hire us to program a new proximity fob in an all-keys-lost scenario, we do not just add a new key. We connect to the car's computer and erase all previously registered fob codes. The lost fob is permanently deactivated and cannot start your car again.

What vehicle makes and models do you service?

We service domestic and import vehicles including GM, Ford, Chrysler, Toyota, Honda, Nissan, Hyundai, BMW, Mercedes-Benz, Audi, and Land Rover. Coverage extends to most vehicles from 1995 onward.

Can you program a transponder key on-site?

Yes. Our mobile units carry OBD programming equipment for most makes. We cut and program transponder keys, smart keys, and proximity fobs at your location.

What happens if I have lost all keys to the vehicle?

We can generate a new key from the VIN and door code on most vehicles. All-keys-lost jobs require proof of ownership. The scope is larger because full module initialization is required, and the exact quote is provided before dispatch.

Do you repair or replace ignition cylinders?

Yes. We rebuild or replace ignition cylinders and can often save the existing key code so your current key cut still works in door locks.

Can you program a remote or key fob without the original?

Yes for most vehicles. Some manufacturers require dealer-level authorization tokens for proximity fob programming. We confirm compatibility before dispatch.

Why use you instead of the dealer for car keys?

Mobile dispatch means the technician comes to your driveway, parking garage, or roadside location. There is no tow truck and no multi-day dealer appointment. We use original equipment quality blanks and chips, so the result is functionally identical to a dealer-supplied key. Call or text with your year, make, and model and we confirm the exact total before dispatching.

What is your mobile dispatch radius in DC?

We dispatch throughout all four DC quadrants and into adjacent Montgomery County, Prince George's County, and Arlington and Alexandria, Virginia.

Quote Process

Send a Photo. Get the Exact Quote.

Before any technician is dispatched, a manager reviews the photos you send and confirms a single total. That confirmed total is the number on the invoice. Send a photo of the lock, door, or vehicle and a manager will reply with the exact amount before anyone is scheduled. The quote is the total.
