Trunk Lockout Service in Washington DC

Trunk lockouts happen more often than people expect. You set your bag in the trunk, toss your keys in with it, and slam the lid. Or the electronic latch fails. Or the trunk release cable snaps. Whatever the cause, your keys are inside and you’re standing in a parking lot.

How Trunk Lockouts Happen

  • Keys tossed in with groceriesYou loaded the trunk, dropped the keys inside, and closed the lid before realizing.
  • Auto-lock activatedSome vehicles auto-lock all doors and the trunk after a certain period. If your keys are inside, you’re locked out of everything.
  • Trunk latch failureThe electronic or mechanical latch mechanism failed, preventing the trunk from opening even with the key or fob.
  • Key fob dead batteryThe fob button that pops the trunk no longer works because the battery died.
  • Valet key limitationsValet keys on some vehicles intentionally don’t open the trunk, but if the full key is inside, you have a problem.

Our Trunk Lockout Process

  1. Tell us the vehicle detailsMake, model, year, and trunk type (sedan, SUV liftgate, hatchback).
  2. We select the right approachDifferent vehicles require different entry strategies. We’ll determine whether cabin access or direct trunk access is faster and safer.
  3. Non-destructive cabin entryFor most vehicles, we access the cabin first using air wedges and long-reach tools, then use the interior trunk release.
  4. Trunk access confirmedYour trunk is open, keys retrieved, and the vehicle is fully functional.
  5. Function testWe verify the trunk lock, latch, and release button all work correctly before we leave.

Vehicles with Common Trunk Lockout Issues

Vehicle TypeCommon Issue
Sedans (Honda, Toyota, Hyundai)Auto-lock engages after 30 seconds with keys in trunk
Luxury (BMW, Mercedes, Audi)Electronic trunk latch failure, dead fob battery
SUVs & HatchbacksLiftgate strut failure prevents trunk from opening
Older Vehicles (pre-2010)Separate trunk key cylinder, no interior release
Electric Vehicles (Tesla, Rivian)Frunk/trunk controlled by app, app failure locks you out

What NOT to Do

  • Don’t force the trunk lidBending the trunk lid can misalign the latch permanently.
  • Don’t try to pick the trunk lockTrunk lock cylinders are more fragile than door locks and can break easily.
  • Don’t use a screwdriver to pryThis damages the weather seal and trunk edge, leading to water leaks.

Common Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

Can you open my trunk without going through the car doors?

In some cases, yes, depending on the vehicle. However, for most modern vehicles, the safest and fastest method is to first access the cabin using non-destructive tools, then use the interior trunk release. This avoids any risk of damage to the trunk lock mechanism.

What if my trunk release button doesn't work?

If the electronic trunk release inside the cabin isn't functioning, we can access the trunk through alternative methods, including the rear seat fold-down, emergency trunk release cable, or by working directly on the trunk lock cylinder.

My key fob opens the trunk but the remote isn't working.

If your fob's trunk-open function stopped working, it could be a dead battery, a programming issue, or a faulty trunk latch actuator. We can diagnose the issue, replace the fob battery, or open the trunk manually while you arrange a repair.

Can you make a new trunk key?

Yes. If your trunk uses a separate key (common on some older vehicles), we can cut a new key on-site. If the trunk uses the same key as the ignition, we can create a duplicate of your car key as well.

What if I locked something valuable in the trunk?

We treat every trunk lockout with urgency. If there are temperature-sensitive items (medications, electronics) or time-sensitive items (work materials, travel documents), let us know when you call and we'll prioritize your dispatch.
