Sliding Glass Door Locks in Washington DC

Stop intruders from lifting or breaking your patio door with specialized sliding door secondary locks

  • Licensed and bonded technicians serving DC homeowners since 2004.
  • Same-day service available on most residential hardware.
  • Every install includes a reinforced 3-inch strike plate.

What We Offer

Heavy-Duty Track Bars

charley bars and hinged security bars that physically wedge the door into the frame, preventing it from sliding even if the main lock is picked or broken.

Anti-Lift Hardware

Installation of specialized pins and rollers that lock the moving panel in place vertically, eliminating the 'lift-and-remove' burglary technique.

Mortise Lock Replacement

We replace stripped, broken, or jammed interior mortise lock bodies inside the door frame, restoring smooth, reliable locking action.

Double-Bolt Locks

Upgraded secondary locks installed at the top or bottom of the frame that throw a bolt directly into the track for immense prying resistance.

Stop The Most Common Method of Backyard Entry

For burglars, the backyard patio door is an ideal target. It is usually shielded from the street, surrounded by privacy fences, and traditionally features the absolute weakest locks in the entire house.

If you live in a DC row house with a rear patio, or a first-floor condo with sliding balcony doors, factory latches simply aren’t enough. DC Local Locksmith provides layered security solutions specifically engineered to address the unique vulnerabilities of sliding glass doors.

The Weakness: Lift & Pry Bypassing

Most homeowners assume breaking the glass is the main risk. In reality, tempered glass makes a loud, recognizable sound that burglars avoid. They attack the mechanism instead.

1. The Hook Failure: The factory latch is usually a small piece of die-cast metal shaped like a hook. When pried with a crowbar, this cheap metal simply snaps in half. We repair and replace these internal mortise lock bodies with thicker, higher-quality steel components.

2. The Lift-Out Bypassing: Sliding doors sit on rollers in a bottom track, with empty space in the top track to allow for installation. Burglars use this empty space against you. By lifting the door upward, the bottom rollers clear the track, and the door can be tilted right into your living room.

Our Layered Patio Security Solutions

To properly secure a sliding patio door, we deploy secondary hardware that physically anchors the door precisely where it stands.

  • Foot-Operated Deadbolts: Installed at the bottom corner of the active door panel. You simply tap it with your foot, and a thick steel bolt shoots downward through the track. This prevents both sliding and lifting.
  • Top-Mount Anti-Lift Locks: Mounted high on the door frame where children cannot reach it. This secondary bracket locks the door into the top track, neutralizing “lift-out” attacks.
  • Hinged Security Bars (Charley Bars): Far superior to a loose stick in the track, these solid metal bars are permanently affixed to the door frame. When swung down into place, they wedge the door shut. Because they are mounted at waist-height, an intruder cannot simply jiggle them loose by shaking the door framing.

Child Safety Considerations

Sliding doors are dangerous for toddlers attracted to outdoor pools or busy streets. The standard handle lock is typically right at a child’s height.

We install top-mounted security bolts near the top of the door frame, well out of reach for young children. Parents gain the confidence that the door stays closed until an adult opens it.

Don’t trust your home’s security to a flimsy factory latch. Contact DC Local Locksmith today to reinforce your sliding glass doors.

Common Questions

Sliding Glass Door Locks in Washington DC FAQs

Why is it so easy to break into a sliding glass door?

Most builder-grade sliding doors rely on a small, fragile hook mechanism to latch the door. A burglar with a flathead screwdriver can pry and snap this hook in seconds. Many sliding doors also have enough vertical clearance that an intruder can grab the handles, lift the door upward, and pop it out of the track without touching the lock.

Is a wooden dowel in the track a good security measure?

A wooden broomstick in the track is better than nothing, but it is not true security. It can splinter under heavy prying force, and if it bounces out of place during an aggressive lifting attempt, the door opens. We install permanent, fold-down solid aluminum security bars that lock firmly into position and cannot be dislodged from the outside.

Can you rekey a sliding door so it uses my front door key?

It depends on your door's hardware. Most sliding doors use small-format wafer locks that are incompatible with standard front-door cylinders. However, we can install specialized aftermarket keyed handlesets on many sliding doors that accept standard Schlage or Kwikset cylinders, allowing us to key your whole house to one key.

Are you licensed and insured for residential work in DC?

Yes. DC Local Locksmith holds a current DC and MD license, is fully bonded, and carries general liability insurance. Documentation is available on request.

Do you offer after-hours service for home lockouts?

Yes. Our dispatch line is staffed 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, including holidays. Quoted before dispatch.

Which lock brands do you install and service?

We install and service Schlage, Yale, Kwikset, Medeco, Mul-T-Lock, and most ANSI-rated residential hardware. We can supply hardware or install what you provide.

Should I rekey or replace my locks after moving into a new home?

Rekeying is the faster option when the hardware is in good condition and serves most change-of-occupancy needs. Replacement is warranted when hardware is worn, damaged, or below ANSI Grade 1 standard. We confirm which path fits your hardware during the quote.

Can you cut additional keys on-site?

Yes. We carry key blanks for most residential cylinders and can cut copies at the time of service.

What is ANSI Grade 1, and do I need it for my exterior doors?

ANSI Grade 1 is the highest residential security rating, tested for 250,000 cycles, 6 attempts at 75-pound force, and pick/drill resistance. We recommend Grade 1 on all exterior doors and Grade 2 minimum on interior doors.

What is your protocol for eviction-related lock changes?

We require a copy of the court order before performing an eviction lock change. We do not perform lock changes on occupied residential units without legal authorization.
