Side Door Deadbolts

We harden the pedestrian side-door of your garage with ANSI Grade 1 deadbolts and heavy-duty steel strike plates to prevent kick-ins.

Keyless Entry Systems

Installation of weatherized digital keypads so you can access your garage while biking or running without carrying a metal key.

Interior Slide Latches

Securing the Most Vulnerable Entry Point in Your DC Home

A high proportion of residential break-ins originate in the garage. Many homeowners leave the door from the garage to the house unlocked, assuming the main garage door provides enough security.

DC Local Locksmith handles garage security for detached alleyway garages in Capitol Hill and attached suburban garages in Northwest DC, ensuring every access point is mechanically reinforced.

Securing Manual Garage Doors

For historic or detached garages that do not utilize electric openers, mechanical locking hardware is your only line of defense.

  • T-Handle & L-Handle Locks: The classic center-mounted handles that connect to a cable system, locking the door firmly to the tracks. We replace entire assemblies or just the keyed cylinders when keys are lost.
  • Slide Latches: Interior floor-level or track-level bolts that physically pin the door in place, preventing it from being lifted from the outside.
  • Exterior Deadbolts: Heavy-duty rim cylinders that shoot a solid metal bolt directly into the garage door’s track frame.

Securing Attached Garage Pedestrian Doors

The side door leading from your yard into the garage, and the interior door leading from the garage into your home, are critical chokepoints.

These doors are rarely visible from the street, making them ideal targets for burglars to kick in without being seen. We treat the door connecting your garage to your living room exactly like a front door. We install Grade 1 deadbolts, wrap-around door edge guards, and reinforced steel strike plates utilizing 3-inch screws to anchor directly into the foundational wall studs.

Digital Upgrades: Keyless & Smart Access

We offer modernized access solutions for active families.

  • Exterior Keypads: We install hardened, weather-resistant keypads allowing you to enter your garage without carrying keys while walking the dog or coming back from a run.
  • Smart Connectivity: For side pedestrian doors, we can install Wi-Fi-enabled deadbolts that allow you to check if the door is locked from your smartphone while away on vacation.

Don’t let your garage be the weak link in your home’s security system. Contact DC Local Locksmith today to evaluate and upgrade your garage door locks.

Common Questions

Garage Door Locks in Washington DC FAQs

My garage door has an automatic opener. Do I still need a lock?

If you have an automatic opener, engaging a manual lock while the opener is attached can actually burn out the opener's motor if you accidentally trigger it. However, you should still secure the pedestrian side doors, and we recommend installing a vacation lock (a slide latch) for when you disable the opener during long trips.

Can a burglar hack my automatic garage door opener?

Older systems using dip-switches are vulnerable to code-grabbing devices. Modern rolling-code openers are highly secure against hacking. However, the most common 'hack' is a burglar exploiting the emergency release cord from the outside using a coat hanger. We can secure this release mechanism to prevent physical tampering.

I lost the key to my manual garage door lock. Can you open it?

Yes. Our technicians can pick the cylinder on standard T-handle locks to get your door open. In most cases, it is more practical to replace the lock cylinder with a brand new unit and a fresh set of keys right on the spot.

Are you licensed and insured for residential work in DC?

Yes. DC Local Locksmith holds a current DC and MD license, is fully bonded, and carries general liability insurance. Documentation is available on request.

Do you offer after-hours service for home lockouts?

Yes. Our dispatch line is staffed 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, including holidays. Quoted before dispatch.

Which lock brands do you install and service?

We install and service Schlage, Yale, Kwikset, Medeco, Mul-T-Lock, and most ANSI-rated residential hardware. We can supply hardware or install what you provide.

Should I rekey or replace my locks after moving into a new home?

Rekeying is the faster option when the hardware is in good condition and serves most change-of-occupancy needs. Replacement is warranted when hardware is worn, damaged, or below ANSI Grade 1 standard. We confirm which path fits your hardware during the quote.

Can you cut additional keys on-site?

Yes. We carry key blanks for most residential cylinders and can cut copies at the time of service.

What is ANSI Grade 1, and do I need it for my exterior doors?

ANSI Grade 1 is the highest residential security rating, tested for 250,000 cycles, 6 attempts at 75-pound force, and pick/drill resistance. We recommend Grade 1 on all exterior doors and Grade 2 minimum on interior doors.

What is your protocol for eviction-related lock changes?

We require a copy of the court order before performing an eviction lock change. We do not perform lock changes on occupied residential units without legal authorization.
