What We Offer

Fresh Door Prep

We drill precise bore holes and mortise pockets into virgin wood and fiberglass doors, ensuring factory-perfect alignment without splintering.

Architectural Hardware

We work with premium lock manufacturers like Baldwin, Emtek, and Rocky Mountain Hardware to match your specific interior design aesthetic.

Construction Master Keying

We set up temporary construction cylinders that allow contractor access during the build, which are instantly mechanically voided the moment the homeowner's permanent key is first used.

Smart Home Planning

We consult on door and frame requirements for hardwired smart locks, electronic strikes, and low-voltage access control systems before drywall goes up.

New Construction Hardware in Washington DC

From modern infill houses in Palisades to gut renovations in Dupont Circle, DC has a wide range of new construction. When you are investing tens of thousands of dollars in custom mahogany entry doors, the hardware installation has to be exact: wrong holes mean a ruined door slab.

DC Local Locksmith drills, mortises, and mounts premium hardware on new construction, ensuring smooth operation and no damage to the door.

The Hardware Schedule

A luxury home can easily have 30+ doors inside it, each requiring specific hardware logic. We help you build and execute the “hardware schedule.”

  • Entry Doors: High-security deadbolts, multi-point locking systems, and solid brass handlesets.
  • Passage vs. Privacy: Ensuring bathrooms and bedrooms have privacy locks with emergency egress, while closets and hallways have smooth passage latches.
  • Smart Integration: Aligning Wi-Fi and Z-Wave deadbolts to interact with the home’s broader automation system.
  • Egress Compliance: Ensuring all exterior doors meet DC residential building codes for single-motion egress to prevent fire hazards.

The Problem with Factory Door Prep

Many builders order exterior doors “pre-bored” from the factory. While this saves the carpenter time, factory bore holes are often drilled to a standard generic spacing. If you want to install a towering, custom-length handleset, or a specialized mortise lock, those factory holes may be entirely in the wrong place, potentially ruining a custom door.

By bringing DC Local Locksmith into the process early, we can instruct the door manufacturer to leave the slabs “blank” or “un-prepped.” Our technicians will then precisely drill the doors on-site using laser-guided jigs to fit the exact hardware you have chosen.

Construction Keying: Securing the Build

During a 12-month build, dozens of subcontractors need access to the property. Handing out physical keys is a massive liability. If a key is lost, thousands of dollars of appliances and copper wire are at risk.

We deploy Construction Master Keying. We install temporary cylinders that operate on a “contractor key.” On closing day, you simply insert your permanent “homeowner key” and turn it. This mechanical action permanently locks out the contractor keys. The house is instantly secured to you alone, with zero extra rekeying fees.

Common Questions

New Construction Lock Installation in Washington DC FAQs

At what phase of construction should we contact a locksmith?

It is best to contact us during the framing or early drywall phase, especially if you are considering electronic access control, smart locks, or specialized mortise hardware. Early consultation ensures your builder preps the doors correctly and runs low-voltage wiring if needed.

Can you source the hardware, or do we buy it ourselves?

We prefer to source the hardware directly. The residential hardware market is flooded with knock-offs and mixed ANSI grades that look identical online. By sourcing directly through our wholesale distributors, we guarantee you receive Grade 1 or Grade 2 solid brass components that carry authentic manufacturer warranties.

What is a 'construction key'?

A construction key system allows builders, painters, and tradesmen to access the property during the build. Once the home is finished and turned over, you insert your permanent 'owner key.' Turning this owner key automatically drops a tiny internal bearing, instantly and permanently disabling all construction keys without needing a locksmith to rekey the house.

Are you licensed and insured for residential work in DC?

Yes. DC Local Locksmith holds a current DC and MD license, is fully bonded, and carries general liability insurance. Documentation is available on request.

Do you offer after-hours service for home lockouts?

Yes. Our dispatch line is staffed 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, including holidays. Quoted before dispatch.

Which lock brands do you install and service?

We install and service Schlage, Yale, Kwikset, Medeco, Mul-T-Lock, and most ANSI-rated residential hardware. We can supply hardware or install what you provide.

Should I rekey or replace my locks after moving into a new home?

Rekeying is the faster option when the hardware is in good condition and serves most change-of-occupancy needs. Replacement is warranted when hardware is worn, damaged, or below ANSI Grade 1 standard. We confirm which path fits your hardware during the quote.

Can you cut additional keys on-site?

Yes. We carry key blanks for most residential cylinders and can cut copies at the time of service.

What is ANSI Grade 1, and do I need it for my exterior doors?

ANSI Grade 1 is the highest residential security rating, tested for 250,000 cycles, 6 attempts at 75-pound force, and pick/drill resistance. We recommend Grade 1 on all exterior doors and Grade 2 minimum on interior doors.

What is your protocol for eviction-related lock changes?

We require a copy of the court order before performing an eviction lock change. We do not perform lock changes on occupied residential units without legal authorization.
