Project Overview
The Navy Yard district in Washington DC has grown rapidly, and property managers there have faced security issues tied to easily cloned legacy key fobs. This case study details how DC Local Locksmith worked with a major property management firm to close those gaps.
The Assessment
With residents constantly moving in and out, the building’s legacy unencrypted RFID fobs were frequently copied by third-party kiosks, resulting in ex-tenants and unauthorized individuals accessing the building’s pool, gym, and parking garage. Our licensed security specialists conducted a thorough site survey of the 14-story building. We identified all vulnerable card readers and presented the property management board with a documented proposal to upgrade to an encrypted, cloud-managed credentialing system.
The Implementation
Working diligently over three days to minimize disruption to the residents’ daily routines, our bonded technicians replaced every exterior and amenity access reader with advanced Bluetooth and NFC-enabled units. Instead of easily cloned plastic fobs, we provisioned secure mobile credentials directly to the residents’ smartphones. The installation was clean, met all DC commercial fire codes, and connected directly to the building’s existing mechanized garage gates and lobby turnstiles.
Long-Term Support
The new cloud-based management platform means the concierge desk can instantly grant temporary access to dog walkers or delivery couriers and immediately revoke the access of evicted tenants. Furthermore, DC Local Locksmith remains the exclusive service partner for the property, offering our guaranteed rapid response for any door hardware maintenance or emergency lockouts across the complex.
