Project Overview
Balancing modern convenience with strict historic preservation is a practical challenge in Washington DC’s oldest neighborhoods. This case study details how DC Local Locksmith integrated smart lock technology into a historic Georgetown residence without altering its exterior hardware or violating district preservation requirements.
The Assessment
The clients loved their historic home but were frustrated with managing physical keys for their family, dog walkers, and housekeepers. They requested a smart lock upgrade. However, the property fell under strict Georgetown historic district regulations, which meant no bulky electronic keypads could be mounted on the exterior door. Our licensed experts arrived on site, evaluated the deeply mortised antique lockbox, and devised a tailored solution.
The Implementation
Understanding the delicate nature of aged wood and antique brass, our bonded technicians carefully disassembled the interior lock mechanism. We installed an advanced ‘invisible’ smart lock module that replaces only the interior thumb-turn component. This allowed the exterior keyhole and backplate to remain entirely undisturbed. We then assisted the homeowner in setting up the encrypted mobile application, ensuring they understood how to issue and revoke digital keys securely.
Long-Term Support
The installed system meets modern technical standards and includes a mechanical override, ensuring the clients are never locked out in the event of a power failure. We provide ongoing priority support and routine maintenance checks to ensure the electronics and the aging wooden door frame continue to operate reliably.
