Put immediate safety first
If a lockout involves a medical emergency, fire, or someone in immediate danger, call 911 first. A routine locksmith visit should not delay emergency assistance. If you suspect a break-in and someone may still be inside, stay out and contact police. DC Police’s home-safety guidance advises against entering when you return to a suspicious situation.
For an ordinary lockout, move to a safe place while you make calls. Keep your phone available and tell any responding provider if your waiting location changes.
Check an authorized backup
Contact a household member, trusted spare-key holder, concierge, or building manager. Confirm whether they can assist and when. Do not assume every building maintains a master key or that another resident may authorize access to your home.
Use only an ordinary entrance you are entitled to use and can reach safely. Avoid climbing to a window, crossing a neighbor’s property, forcing hardware, or breaking glass. A risky shortcut can turn a lockout into an injury or a larger repair.
Describe the exact access problem
Identify whether the issue is at the shared building entrance, the unit door, or both. Explain whether keys are inside, missing, broken, or unable to turn. Include the full DC address and quadrant, the unit or entrance, and any building access restrictions.
Prepare identification and evidence of your authority to request entry. If those records are inside, explain that before the visit and ask how authorization can be established through the provider’s process.
Confirm the service before authorizing it
Ask for the business name, callback number, current availability, and arrival estimate. Clarify the service or trip charge, labor, parts, assessment fees, and any after-hours charges. Ask how a changed scope will be approved.
There is no entry method that suits every lock and condition. If drilling or replacement is proposed, ask why, what will need replacing, and how that affects the total. After access is restored
Review whether the original problem still needs repair. If a missing key can still operate the lock, discuss the access risk and whether rekeying is appropriate. A lockout with keys safely inside does not automatically require replacing the hardware.
