Car Ignition Rekeying in Washington DC

Restore Single-Key Convenience and Secure Your Vehicle After a Theft

  • Mobile unit arrives to your location anywhere in DC.
  • On-site key cutting and transponder programming in one visit.
  • Original equipment quality keys and fobs for every major make.

What We Offer

Post-Theft Security Lockout

If your keys are stolen, we manually change the depths of the wafers inside your ignition and doors. The stolen key will not work again.

Mismatched Key Fixing

If a previous owner or a mechanic installed an aftermarket ignition, we will extract it and re-pin it so it perfectly matches your original factory door key.

Vandalism Restoration

If a thief severely damaged your door lock or ignition trying to steal the car with a screwdriver, we install and re-key a new replacement cylinder on-site.

Mobile Convenience

Ignition and door rekeying requires disassembling the interior of the car. We do this in your driveway or parking garage, sparing you a massive dealership labor bill.

Re-Securing Your Vehicle’s Mechanical Defenses

Most modern drivers only think about the electronic security of their vehicles, transponder chips, alarms, and immobilizers. However, the physical mechanical locks protecting your ignition and doors remain your primary line of defense.

When those mechanical defenses are compromised, or when a lazy prior repair leaves you fumbling with multiple different keys on your keychain, it deeply impacts the security and convenience of your daily commute.

DC Local Locksmith provides mobile automotive rekeying. We manipulate the internal architecture of your vehicle’s locks to address security vulnerabilities without charging you for unnecessary hardware.

Scenario 1: The Post-Theft Security Panic

Having your keys stolen in Washington DC is a stressful event. If your keys were taken from a gym locker, stolen during a home burglary, or dropped near where your car is parked, the thief has the tool needed to drive your vehicle away.

A dealership’s solution is costly: replacing the ignition switch, the driver door lock, the passenger door lock, and the trunk lock with entirely new hardware.

Our Locksmith Solution: We do not replace the hardware unless it is physically shattered. Instead, our commercial technicians deploy to your vehicle and execute a complete Vehicle Rekey:

  1. We remove the interior door panels to extract the door lock cylinders.
  2. We extract the ignition cylinder from the steering column.
  3. We open the lock cores and physically remove the brass wafers.
  4. We insert a fresh, mathematically foreign combination of wafers.
  5. We CNC-mill a brand new key to match the new configuration, and digitally program it to the engine.

The stolen key is now obsolete. If the thief inserts it into the door or the ignition, it will physically refuse to turn.

Scenario 2: Curing “Two-Key Syndrome”

“Two-Key Syndrome” happens when an ignition fails, and the driver takes the car to a general mechanic rather than a specialized automotive locksmith.

Mechanics buy pre-assembled ignition switches from auto parts stores. These switches come with pre-cut generic keys. The mechanic bolts the ignition in and hands you the new generic key. Because they did not change the door locks, you now have to use your old key to open the door, and the new generic key to start the engine. This is highly frustrating and lowers the resale value of the car.

Our Locksmith Solution: We actively fix mechanics’ mistakes. We will dispatch to your home, carefully extract the aftermarket ignition the mechanic installed, disassemble it, and re-pin it so it perfectly matches the mathematical cuts of your original door key. We restore your vehicle to factory single-key convenience on-site.

The Specialized Skill of Re-Pinning

Rekeying an automotive cylinder requires precision. Car locks are smaller and more complex than a front-door deadbolt. Some European luxury vehicles, like late-model BMWs and Audis, use high-security sidewinder locks with split-wafer designs that many standard locksmiths cannot disassemble correctly.

Our technicians carry the specialized tweezers, wafer kits, and training required to rebuild and re-key complex automotive locks at your location.

If your keys are stolen, or you are tired of carrying a massive ring of mismatched car keys, call DC Local Locksmith at (202) 830-0706 for rapid, expert ignition and door rekeying across Washington DC.

Common Questions

Car Ignition Rekeying in Washington DC FAQs

What does it mean to 'rekey' a car ignition?

Rekeying an ignition does not mean replacing it. Inside the ignition cylinder are tiny brass wafers configured in a specific pattern to match the teeth on your key. When we rekey your ignition, we take it apart, remove the old wafers, and insert a different combination of wafers. We then cut a brand new key to match the new pattern. Your old key is useless.

Someone stole my purse with my car keys. Do I have to rekey the ignition, or just reprogram the computer?

It depends heavily on the security risk you want to tolerate. Reprogramming the computer deletes the stolen key's transponder chip, meaning the thief cannot start the engine. However, if they find your car on the street, the stolen physical key will still mechanically unlock the doors, allowing them to steal your belongings. To fully secure the car, we must rekey the physical door locks AND reprogram the anti-theft computer.

A mechanic replaced my ignition, and now I have a 'door key' and an 'ignition key'. Can you fix this?

Yes, this is a frequent problem. The mechanic bought an off-the-shelf ignition that came with random keys. We will come to you, carefully extract the new ignition the mechanic installed, discard the random keys, and re-pin the cylinder's core to mathematically match your original door key.

What vehicle makes and models do you service?

We service domestic and import vehicles including GM, Ford, Chrysler, Toyota, Honda, Nissan, Hyundai, BMW, Mercedes-Benz, Audi, and Land Rover. Coverage extends to most vehicles from 1995 onward.

Can you program a transponder key on-site?

Yes. Our mobile units carry OBD programming equipment for most makes. We cut and program transponder keys, smart keys, and proximity fobs at your location.

What happens if I have lost all keys to the vehicle?

We can generate a new key from the VIN and door code on most vehicles. All-keys-lost jobs require proof of ownership. The scope is larger because full module initialization is required, and the exact quote is provided before dispatch.

Do you repair or replace ignition cylinders?

Yes. We rebuild or replace ignition cylinders and can often save the existing key code so your current key cut still works in door locks.

Can you program a remote or key fob without the original?

Yes for most vehicles. Some manufacturers require dealer-level authorization tokens for proximity fob programming. We confirm compatibility before dispatch.

Why use you instead of the dealer for car keys?

Mobile dispatch means the technician comes to your driveway, parking garage, or roadside location. There is no tow truck and no multi-day dealer appointment. We use original equipment quality blanks and chips, so the result is functionally identical to a dealer-supplied key. Call or text with your year, make, and model and we confirm the exact total before dispatching.

What is your mobile dispatch radius in DC?

We dispatch throughout all four DC quadrants and into adjacent Montgomery County, Prince George's County, and Arlington and Alexandria, Virginia.

Quote Process

Send a Photo. Get the Exact Quote.

Before any technician is dispatched, a manager reviews the photos you send and confirms a single total. That confirmed total is the number on the invoice. Send a photo of the lock, door, or vehicle and a manager will reply with the exact amount before anyone is scheduled. The quote is the total.
