First, Check Whether This Is an Emergency for 911
If a child is alone in a vehicle, someone needs urgent medical help, or there is an immediate threat, call 911. Do not delay emergency help while arranging a locksmith. If you suspect a break-in, stay outside and follow police instructions before arranging repairs.
For a routine lockout, wait somewhere safe and keep your phone available. Avoid climbing to a window, forcing the door, or trying tools in a lock.
Have These Details Ready
- Location: The street address, DC quadrant, unit or parking level, and a nearby landmark if the entrance is hard to find. Share any garage height or access restrictions.
- What is locked: A home, office, car, trunk, mailbox, or safe. Say whether the key is missing, inside, broken, or no longer turning.
- Authorization: Identify the resident, owner, vehicle owner, or property manager who can approve access. Explain if identification is inside the locked property.
- A callback number: Give a number you can answer while waiting. Tell the provider if your battery is low or you need to move to a safer location.
For a vehicle, add the make, model, and year. For an apartment or workplace, contact the building’s approved access service if one is available.
