What We Offer

Adams Rite Hookbolt Upgrades

We replace vulnerable straight deadbolts with heavy-duty pivoting hookbolts that physically grab the door frame, making the door immune to crowbar prying attacks.

Bottom-Rail Deadbolts

For maximum resistance against vehicle ram-raids or brute force kicking, we install a secondary deadbolt that locks the glass door straight down into the concrete foundation.

Commercial Door Closers

Install or repair heavy-duty hydraulic door closers (surface mounted or concealed in the header) ensuring your storefront door swings shut forcefully and consistently every time.

Emergency Break-In Repair

Available 24/7 for immediate emergency board-up service and rapid lock replacement if your storefront is compromised by a smash-and-grab.

Physical Security for DC Storefronts

Your storefront door must do two contradictory things well: swing open thousands of times a day for customers, and become a pry-proof barrier the moment your manager locks up for the night.

Aluminum-framed glass doors, known industrially as “Herculite” or “Kawneer” doors, dominate the retail and commercial architecture of Washington DC. They provide excellent visibility and natural light. The aluminum material is also inherently flexible, making them a target for forced entry if not secured with purpose-built hardware.

DC Local Locksmith provides the heavy architectural hardware required to fortify these beautiful, vulnerable entrances.

The Problem With Standard Storefront Locks

The factory-installed lock on a vast majority of commercial glass doors features a short, straight piece of latching metal. Because the aluminum door frame is designed to be lightweight, a burglar with a standard crowbar can wedge into the gap between double doors. Pushed horizontally, the aluminum bows outward just enough for the straight metal bolt to clear the frame, and the door pops open without shattering a single pane of glass.

The Solution: Commercial Hookbolts

We retrofit flexible aluminum storefronts with high-security Adams Rite style Hookbolt Deadlocks. Instead of a straight bolt fighting against the horizontal prying force, an enormous, multi-laminated steel hook pivots downward when the key is turned. This hook grabs the strike plate channel and anchors the active door to the frame.

Because the hook pulls the door inward against lateral force, prying the door horizontally with a crowbar causes the hook to bite harder into the frame, defeating the attack.

Securing the Automatic and Swinging Door

Beyond the deadbolt, the mechanics of the door itself are a massive security factor. If the door does not shut forcefully, the lock is useless.

Heavy winds, temperature changes, and thousands of daily customer cycles take a real toll on your door hardware.

  • Commercial Door Closers: We install and repair heavy-duty, cast-iron hydraulic closers (both surface-mounted and concealed inside the upper door frame header). We calibrate the sweep and latch speeds perfectly, ensuring the heavy glass door swings shut smoothly but latches forcefully every single time a customer leaves.
  • Flush Bolts for Double Doors: On a set of double doors, one door is the “active” door with the keyhole, and the other is the “inactive” door. The active door locks into the inactive door. If the inactive door can move, the lock fails. We install heavy steel flush bolts that lock the inactive door deeply into the concrete floor and the steel upper header, turning it into an immovable monolith for your active lock to secure against.

Electronic Access for Glass Doors

Upgrading a glass storefront door from physical keys to electronic access control requires highly specialized electric strike hardware. A standard residential electric strike will not fit inside a narrow aluminum storefront frame.

We supply and install specialized, narrow-stile electric strikes and electromagnetic locks (maglocks) designed explicitly for commercial aluminum doors. This allows your business to utilize keyless entry systems, buzzing in customers remotely or allowing staff to unlock the door with an encrypted proximity fob or smartphone application.

Common Questions

Storefront Door Locks in Washington DC FAQs

Why is a straight deadbolt dangerous on a glass storefront door?

Aluminum door frames flex. When a straight-throw deadbolt is engaged, a burglar simply wedges a crowbar between the two double doors and pushes sideways. The aluminum bows, the straight bolt slips out of the hole, and the door opens. We install Hookbolt deadlocks. The hook drops down and physically anchors behind the strike plate. If you pry the door sideways, the hook just grabs tighter. It cannot be pried out.

Our front door slams violently when it closes. Can you fix this?

Yes. A slamming door means the internal hydraulic fluid in your commercial door closer has leaked out, creating a real liability for shattered glass or injured fingers. In most cases, the hydraulic closer mechanism at the top of the door frame must be replaced.

What is a 'thumbturn' and why does the fire marshal care?

DC Fire Code strictly mandates that a commercial door must be openable from the inside without the use of a key, allowing for instant panic evacuation. If you have a double-sided key cylinder (requiring a key to exit), you are in violation of code. We install an 'ADA compliant thumbturn' on the inside of the door relative to the lock, ensuring safety and compliance.

What is an anti-pry plate, and does my storefront need one?

An anti-pry plate (also called a wrap-around or armor plate) is a heavy gauge steel plate that covers the area around the lock on both the door and the frame face. Burglars attack the door and frame wood or aluminum around the lock cylinder, not the cylinder itself, because the surrounding material is softer and less hardened. An anti-pry plate distributes the attack force across a wider steel surface, making the frame portion of the attack nearly impossible. For aluminum storefront frames that have thin walls, we install a steel channel reinforcement inside the frame as an alternative.

What is the correct emergency egress configuration for a storefront double door?

DC Fire Code and NFPA 101 require that any door on a required egress path be openable from the inside without a key, special knowledge, or effort. For glass double doors, the active leaf must have a lever or thumbturn that retracts all bolts simultaneously from the inside. The inactive leaf must have top and bottom flush bolts operable by hand from the inside. A double-sided key cylinder configuration violates egress code on any exit door.

Can you make my storefront glass more resistant to smash-and-grab attacks?

Yes. We apply 3M or Llumar safety and security film to the glass. The film does not prevent the glass from breaking, but it holds shattered fragments together on the film, significantly slowing down entry. A burglar expecting to smash through in seconds instead finds the window intact on the film and must spend 30 to 60 seconds punching through, which significantly increases the chance of detection. We also install door frame perimeter anchors that bond the glass panel to the frame.

My storefront concealed closer has leaked oil and the door slams. Can you replace it?

Yes. Concealed closers on glass storefront doors are hidden inside the header frame (top rail) of the aluminum door. We disassemble the header to access the closer body, replace the hydraulic unit with a new closer from a compatible manufacturer (Norton, Dorma, or LCN), and recalibrate sweep speed, latch speed, and backcheck before closing the frame. Most installations are complete in 3 to 5 hours.

Do you service Herculite frameless glass doors differently than standard aluminum storefront doors?

Yes. Herculite frameless glass doors have no metal frame surrounding the glass, which means the lock hardware must attach directly to the glass via secure adhesive brackets or through drilled mounting points. We use tempered glass-specific drill bits and certified two-part adhesive brackets for attachment points, then install the appropriate lockset for frameless glass: typically an Adams Rite deadlatch or a pull bar with a back-mounted deadbolt cylinder.
